Default Depression Study: What are your dreams like?

I recently watched a documentary from Zone about what are dreams for and I came across that people who have depression dream about misfortune. So, the reason for this thread is to analyze if this statement is true.

Tell me if you have depression and tell me what are your dreams like. 80% of dreams are mostly sexual as stated from that documentary, so if you have them share or don't share.

sorry not part of that 80%--but possible because I am female????

I have only remembered 3 dreams. I have had them each a couple times.

1 is sexual and well, I'll keep that one off the forums.

I usually do have these dreams under depressed states. Usually when lots of things are going wrong or traumatic experiences.

1. A black and white dream that has me waking up, going down to the kitchen to get a snack/dinner/something that is not explained. On the way there, the scene expands to be my kitchen (From childhood) but it is like a movie set and the kitchen is inside a cave wall, or perhaps the side of a mountain. Then it gets closeup to me reaching into a cupboard to get a can of...something...and when I open the door, an orange fuzzy octopus falls down and wraps my arms. The octopus is burning me, and then I wake up.

I can explain the octopus as a hemp hanging plant holder. It was shaped as an octopus. Orange? No idea why. Burning because as a kid I remember brushing up against the thing and getting poked by the hemp.

2. Another childhood location. I lived in a townhouse in a cul-de-sac (How do you spell that?. Hmm) There were about 6 cul-de-sacs in the neighborhood. In the middle was where cars parked.

Scene is me and a bunch of friends playing in the "popular" cul-de-sac. We were playing a game of tag, running in and out of the parking lots and stuff. Then tripping over my brother who was laying in the grass. When I get up from falling down, I try to lift him up, and instead his leg falls off and I notice that he has been chewed by animals. Specifically 2 huge black dogs that take off towards the retention ponds (A street with a pond on either side for rain runoff). A search party is called to find the dogs and other children that are missing, and it gets cloudy/fuzzy in what is happening till I wake up. Usually screaming.

I can explain the dogs, as a kid I had a friend that owned a farm and they had a trained attack dog to kill coyotes that came to eat the sheep/whatnot. I slept over at his house one day, and woke up and got cereal and went to sit down to watch cartoons. I jumped onto the couch next to my friend and the dog attacked me. (Would have killed me but I raised my arm and it got that instead of my throat.)

#2 is the most frightening dream I have ever had. Mostly because of the death of my brother in it.

Both have been triggered by events and depression.

#1 seems to be a "Catch all" type of dream that I have only had a few times, but they were in particularly depressing episodes of my life.

#2 was only seem twice. First time was when my mother passed away. (Very traumatizing to me as a 10 year old). Second time I had that dream my favorite "pet" got run over. A 3 legged dog named Elky that lived on another farm (Not the one where I got attacked) with another friend of mine.

My dreams, are often sexual. I am a female, and sex doesn't matter with this. Women dream and wish for sex just as much as men so I don't really get your "im not a man so i dun think about sex" comment cosyfiep

I don't really wanna tell what those dreams are. But they are usually sick and absurd. It's usually about kinds of sex I'd never do in my life, like ever. That's how sick and absurd they can be.

I personally believe dreams are to show us what whe'd do in sertant moments/situations tho...

No I'm not crazy

The meds could also be a factor in altering dreams. Anyone tried mirtazapine?

Depression affects serotonin production which affects deeper sleep. Since you don't sleep as deeply as often, it's possible you won't have as many dreams - decreasing the chance you'll even remember them at all.

I was on mirtazapine when I was being wrongly treated for my BPD. I found it got me to sleep very easily, don't remember much about my dreams being out of the ordinary. I found seroquel and risperidone were much worse for that. I would have really bad nightmares more so than usual. All three have sedative effects and are generally recommended to be taken at night. I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly found that the sedative effects soon didn't work for me; same deal with zopiclone which I now need a good 15mg of to knock me out. Funny thing is that I've only been prescribed those for very brief periods (1-2 weeks) spaced out over 6 years. I think 4 times in total?

Having said that, BPD and bipolar are very different from depression sleep patterns... This coming from the British insomniac of the AoL alliance who will be on even when all the Americans have gone to bed because she just can't sleep! Gave me the chance to do a very nice FoW duo with a night shift working guildie this morning though lol

Back to the topic of dreams, they've always been weird for me, meds or no meds. I've not to my knowledge had any recurring dreams. Mostly I don't remember them so maybe I have :P It's the dreams that have me waking up in cold sweats, fighting to breathe and panic stricken that I remember the most. The last one I had was a few nights ago on the 23rd where I dreamt I went to my local store on Christmas Eve to do some last minute food shopping and ended up with a member of staff (who doesn't work there, was no one I know, was someone entirely fictitious) trying to cut my head off with a cleaver whilst restraining me. Not on any meds at the moment. Possibly I should be after that.

I can't say that I've really had any sexual dreams. I guess that part isn't kept tied down by my subconscious but comes out in person with smutty innuendos.

Also, what sort of depression are you talking about? Major Depressive Disorder (clinical depression)? Reactive depression? Lows brought on by other mental health conditions?

@Bellatrixa

Have you had a difficult time controlling your weight with those particular drugs? Each of them are notorious for their weight gain properties IIRC.

and yeah rocky, ever got someone to tell you about the meanings behind the locker and HS thing (I know what flying means, and for the stupidity of it I still remember my jr High locker combo and never HAD locked lockers in HS so thats why its so strange)?

Mirtazapine, no. Seroquel, yes. My half sister put on a lot of weight with risperidone (I didn't stay on it for long) and a friend of mine has gained whilst on olanzapine. Sadly antipsychotics have that effect :/ Mirtazapine is, of course, an anti-depressant but is also used alongside other drugs in the treatment of mood disorders. Most people who use just anti-depressants don't get the same weight gain as those who are on anti-psychotics. Weight gain there is generally due to lack of activity dependant on mood. I hated the fact that I was as active as before I was on the medication, same diet etc and was putting on weight -sigh-

I've heard a lot about olanzapine and weight gain. It's rare for someone to not gain while on it.

Mirtazapine is a unique antidepressant in that it is sedating and an appetite stimulant which is the polar opposite of the SSRIs. I read about a woman in a psychiatric hospital who was on olanzapine and mirtazapine who gained 1.5 lbs per day - on hospital food.

Anyway, I've digressed. Did anyone get weird dreams on paroxetine (paxil/seroxat)? Actually, was anyone fortunate enough to get any sleep with it?

Wow this is more than I can handle. I know about clinical depression more than major depression.

On another note I think the locker dream is the brain's way of figuring out what to do once you forget it. We live in modern times and back in medieval times where dreams range from fear of someone being killed in his sleep to anything. If the medieval man is afraid of getting killed in his sleep his dream will revolve around on how to combat that. There will be a point where that man will sleep lighter and have a weapon under his pillow.

The locker dream is similar. My speculation is that you have something important in your locker before the bell rings like an assignment due.

no, its usually I just cant open it (like when going home after school is over)....I usually dont have assignments ....though I do remember one where I left my flute in my locker (I am not a flute player either--nor was I in the dream).....so weird.

and death- in dreams this usually means the end of something, if you see say the death of a friend, maybe your friendship is ending (or they are moving far away and your friendship will be 'ending')

and yeah I am not up on the different terms of depression---I know the cause of mine (and no, drugs wont solve it)....so mine was always called atypical --------though I am quite sure that many depression sufferers have the same one I have (gee all the commercials about only 1 in 3 are actually HELPED by drugs---maybe drugs aint the answer??????????....how 'bout seeing a doc who will help you resolve the problems instead of just giving you a few more)....sorry soap box

Ya I agree, some people tend to go with drugs and some others think the Indian answer - you can change everything about you with your mind.

Supposedly if you die in a dream you die in real life, or so I heard. But I have also heard a couple of people talk of dying in their dreams.

I mostly have positive or just weird dreams with lots of flying, but there's a couple of really weird ones I don't understand.

The first is where I'm sleeping and all these dark figures are around my bed trying to hurt me and I feel them touch but I laugh because they fail to hurt me. Then when I'm getting up to walk through the house I see my gf making a scary face except it is like her face has been removed, like all the skin and eyes etc and someone else is wearing it. Again it fails to scare me but I'm a bit unsettled. Then I see her or whoever it is outside the window at night and I wave my hand dismissively, and suddenly the person is crucified on a cross in the garden, not dying but just writhing around. So I never really understood what that means. A few days in real life she made the same scary face a few times just to scare me.

A repetitive dream I have is seeing myself surrounded by fire and being on fire, but it's not scary and I want it, it seems to be fire coming from inside me.

The last one I don;t understand was very vivid, and I was flying all over the place, with strange objects suspended around everywhere even in the sky. And I'm on a big schoolbus and my gf asks me to eat dinner, and on my plate is some nice vegetables but at the front what looks like a cute curled up sleeping mouse which looks so serene because it is dead. She tries so hard to gently persuede me to eat it but I don't. I mean it hasn't been skinned and cooked it looks like it just walked out a Disney movie.

So I wonder if anyone can shed light on it? Online dream interpretation dictionaries seem to only bee good if you have a dream with one or two clear messages or objects or themes but not that useful for strange dreams.

flying is the dream symbol of frustration....so if you are flying around something you are probably frustrated by possible not knowing what they are....(this works with my lost locker combo as well---frustration at not remembering something I have lost).

some of the other images can mean different things at different times---the fire coming out of you means something you are doing is 'lighting you on fire' perhaps you are getting inspired to do something???

no idea about the mousy and the veggies....

I've never had a recurring dream.
And if you can find the meaning of one of my dreams then "wow" xD. Most of them are completely random chain on events that really make no sense. And usually the more random they are, the more things I remember.
Like this one :
It was kind of like a horror movie. There was this spider (that kind of looked like a daedra spiderling from Oblivion, but more convered) that was extremely deadly and she will hide a kill people. But there was a way of knowing she was around because random objects would get an orange glow, so you could run, but she was fast.
So after she killed a bunch of people we (don't ask who's "we") ran into a house. There I noticed from the windows, that outside the grass has turned orange so I warned everyone.
Then I somehow managed to catch that spider. I tried to find a way to kill her (and between me catching the spider, and thinking of a way to kill her, the background somehow shifted from a house to the middle of busy street).
My way of killing her ? Rubbing her between my hands. And as I did that she would be disintegrated, except that the pieces that fell were what looked like cooked beef mince. After a while I had feel a wheelbarrow with "beef mince" and all was left of her was a tiny sort of embryo. And after some thinking, I stepped on it to make sure it will be dead.

Of course this might not be the weirdest dream I have, but it's the only one that comes close to a nightmare (not really a nightmare, I won in the end ).

However the dreams that I remember the best are those that end well.
Those that don't end well, simply don't end. When a dream goes bad I get the feeling that I'm in a dream and think "okay that's enough" and just open my eyes and I'm awake.

Had one dream that was going bad but I didn't woke up, I wanted to win .
There was a guy, who told me that he would get back at me by hurting my parents. We were living in an apartment building and as time passed I started to get more and more stressed about what he would do. One day I saw him at the end of the corridor and had enough, I walked up to him and punched him with a lot of strength. And that's where I woke up. I also realized that I didn't dream about that punch, I actually punched the side of my bed xD.
